Bette Midler and Bernadette Peters get together off-make up 10/31/17, via Page Six

Bette Midler's Marie Antoinette wig stood higher than Harry Macklowe's awful looking new Park Avenue building. Bernadette Peters' glorious hair had tchotchkes — all but the show's stage manager — stuffed in it. Neither wore the Dolly red, which

Stella would rather be a graceful pig ballerina than what she really is, a dog no one seems to like, but on the night of her ballet recital Stella learns that it is better to be herself.

Bernadette Peters: Star of stage, screen and Sondheim -

This week, with its spectacular production of “Follies” on the Loretto-Hilton stage and a big gala coming up Sept. 24 at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis celebrates a shining golden anniversary season. “Follies,” of course, is by Stephen Sondheim. And who’s performing at the gala. Bernadette Peters — often described as the foremost Sondheim performer alive. “They’re doing ‘Follies’. ” exclaimed the stage star, movie star, TV star, recording artist and concert performer. Does that sound like a lot. At 68, she’s had time to build a résumé — she’s been working for 65 years. “I love Stephen Sondheim as a person. And I always say, he gives me so much to sing about. A recipient of so many awards that they’re too daunting to count, Peters has two Tony Awards for best actress in a musical: one for “Song and Dance” (by Andrew Lloyd Weber), one for “Annie Get Your Gun” (by Irving Berlin). Over the years, she’s delivered acclaimed performances in “Into the Woods” (as the original Witch), “Sunday in the Park With George” (as the original Dot), “Follies,” “A Little Night Music” and “Anyone Can Whistle” — all Sondheim shows. “When I was about 13, I was in the national tour of ‘Gypsy,’ understudying Dainty June — and my sister understudied Louise,” she said. “Our mother traveled with us. It was a little bit like the show. ” Then, in 2003, she played Mama Rose, a performance that New York Times critic Ben Brantley called “a revelation. She also fills her concerts with plenty of Sondheim songs, including “a lot of his songs that I didn’t sing in the musicals. “You get a different perspective on a song when you’re backstage, listening to someone else sing it. Sondheim really makes you think about life and love and justice. He writes lyrics so specifically. he really writes each character. She was born Bernadette Lazzara in Ozone Park, N. Y. Her father, Peter Lazzara, also gave her her professional surname, chosen to avoid ethnic typecasting. ) But it was their mother who urged her and her sister Donna, now a casting directing, onto the stage. “My mother wanted to be an actress, but her mother — who was from the old country, from Italy — wouldn’t let her,” Peters said. At 19 she made her Broadway debut, and at 20 she won a Theatre World Award for her performance as Josie Cohan in “George M. ”. She says she never minded working as a child, and she still doesn’t. “Remember, I was very lucky: I was never a child star,” she explained. “And it’s wonderful to have a chance to sing when you’re a teenager. Teenagers have so much feeling to get out, and singing is a great way to express that. Her love of music informs her latest project, the Amazon series “Mozart in the Jungle. ” Peters stars as the general manager of a New York orchestra. “We have so much (classical) music in the show,” she said. The writing is very important to me, whether someone else is writing or I am. ”. What she writes focuses on her other great passion: canine rescue. But her colorful children’s books are nothing like those sad commercials you have to turn off. Take Stella, heroine of Peters’ “Stella Is a Star. Stella is a pit bull, but she pretends that she’s a pig ballerina. “Look at the hooves,” Peters says patiently, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. “They look like pointe shoes. Stella — modeled on Peters’ late rescued pit, also Stella — reappears in “Stella and Charlie: Friends Forever. ” Charlie, a pit-something mix (“he looks like a Muppet”), and Rosalia, “a seriously beautiful taupe pit bull with taupe eyes,” are her dogs now. “I like to have one for each hand,” she says. In 1999, Peters and her friend Mary Tyler Moore started Broadway Barks, a charity that raises money for New York-area no-kill shelters and that highlights the issue of canine rescue with a star-studded adoption event in the theater district’s... Peters has also raised funds for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and Broadway Barks has added a new project: Braille Tails, providing books about animals to blind children. Her third Tony, in 2012, the Isabelle Stevenson Special Award, goes to someone from the theater community who has made a substantial contribution of humanitarian, social service or charity work. “I like to.
