We have called him a devil and quarantined him behind such labels as "the most dangerous man alive." But Charles Manson remains a shocking reminder of our own humanity gone awry. This astonishing book lays bare the life and the mind of a man whose acts have left us horrified. His story provides an enormous amount of new information about his life and how it led to the Tate-LaBianca murders, and reminds us of the complexity of the human condition. Born in the middle of the Depression to an unmarried fifteen-year-old, Manson lived through a bewildering succession of changing homes and substitute parents, until his mother finally asked the state authorities to assume his care when he was twelve. Regimented and often brutalized in juvenile homes, Manson became immersed in a life of petty theft, pimping, jail terms, and court appearances that culminated in seven years of prison. Released in 1967, he suddenly found himself in the world of hippies and flower children, a world that not only accepted him, but even glorified his anti-establishment values. It was a combination that led, for reasons only Charles Manson can fully explain, to tragedy. Manson's story, distilled from seven years of interviews and examinations of his correspondence, provides sobering insight into the making of a criminal mind, and a fascinating picture of the last years of the sixties. No one who wants to understand that time, and the man who helped to bring it to a horrifying conclusion, can miss reading this book.

The #1 True Crime Bestseller of All Time―7 Million Copies Sold

In the summer of 1969, in Los Angeles, a series of brutal, seemingly random murders captured headlines across America. A famous actress (and her unborn child), an heiress to a coffee fortune, a supermarket owner and his wife were among the seven victims. A thin trail of circumstances eventually tied the Tate-LeBianca murders to Charles Manson, a would-be pop singer of small talent living in the desert with his "family" of devoted young women and men. What was his hold over them? And what was the motivation behind such savagery? In the public imagination, over time, the case assumed the proportions of myth. The murders marked the end of the sixties and became an immediate symbol of the dark underside of that era.

Vincent Bugliosi was the prosecuting attorney in the Manson trial, and this book is his enthralling account of how he built his case from what a defense attorney dismissed as only "two fingerprints and Vince Bugliosi." The meticulous detective work with which the story begins, the prosecutor's view of a complex murder trial, the reconstruction of the philosophy Manson inculcated in his fervent followers... these elements make for a true crime classic. ?Helter Skelter ?is not merely a spellbinding murder case and courtroom drama but also, in the words of ?The New Republic?, a "social document of rare importance."

Meet David Burkhart, the Latest Actor to Play Charles Manson - People Magazine

For an actor, some roles are harder than others. It's one thing to be a leading man in a romantic comedy. It's another thing entirely to play Charles Manson, one of the most notorious killers in American history. Just one day after Manson family member Leslie van Houten was denied parole , the Reelz Channel is tackling the famous case on the second season of the docuseries Murder Made Me Famous. Actor David Burkhart was cast as Manson – and tells PEOPLE that the role was both challenging and dark. "Before I started filming, I watched videos of Charles Manson over and over and over," Burkhart, 36, tells PEOPLE. I worked very hard at trying to get he nuances of his voice and his mannerisms. Burkhart says that the role was more difficult because the iconic Manson story is a work of non-fiction. "The director, Brad Osborne, reminded us that these were real people, and that we ended to have respect for the victims," he says. Just thinking about what these people went through was awful, and we were actors portraying a role. Manson, 81, remains incarcerated. He is serving 9 concurrent life sentences at Corcoran State Prison in Corcoran, California. Burkhart – who usually gets cast in Biblical roles like Jesus Christ – says he was happy when the "intense" shoot was over. "It took me a while to come down from it. When I was done filming Murder Made Me Famous , I didn't want to ever think about Charles Manson again.
