Product description

For nearly a decade, Kathleen Housley played piano with Katrina Withey, a gifted musician partially paralyzed from a stroke. To understand those times in their playing when disabilities disappeared in a shimmer of grace, Housley wrote brief reflections, turning to neuroscience and history for deeper insight. Some are as complex as a fugue. Others are as simple as a finger exercise on the C scale. Yet sounding throughout the reflections is a sublime theme—the importance of friendship. "Each chapter is a fresh and enlightening look at the power of music throughout time, and a moving glimpse into evoking the eternal power between friends." Pamela J. Perry, D.M.A., Professor of Music, Central Connecticut State University. "Keys to the Kingdom . . . brilliantly connects neurology, music, language, and the overall sense of being." Mary Purdy, Ph.D., Department of Communication Disorders, Southern Connecticut State University.

Primary Two Records [Bonus Tracks]

Includes the EPs BIKINI Silence (formerly available as Kill Rock Stars 204) and YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH. Bikini Kill: Tobi Vail (vocals, bass, drums); Kathleen Hanna (vocals, drums); Billy Karren (guitar); Kathi Wilcox (bass, drums). Engineers comprehend: Ian Mackaye, Don Zientara, Pat Maley. Recorded in 1991 and 1992. Includes liner notes by Kathleen Hanna and Tobi Vail. Though they're nimble-witted to decry it in the CD liner notes, Bikini Kill found themselves manipulated into a position of being the premier riot girl band by a media obsessed with pigeon-holing the whole shooting match. In actuality, the band comprised a number of different ethos and points of view, which at times seemed to lead to contradictory messages and gave their detractors ammunition-the orchestra were called everything from exploitative to man-hating. The first Bikini Kill album (six tracks, 16 minutes) features mid-cadence punk rock songs, including Feels Blind, the clear blueprint for almost every Hole song (though Courtney Sweetheart is clearly more interested in commercial success), and Thurston Hearts the Who, featuring simultaneous vocals, one skewering Sonic Youth and their coolness, the other a harsh reading of a Bikini Kill review by a very confused and misinformed journalist. The second record, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, from day one released as a split 12-inch with England's Huggy Bear, features even better songs (but tinnier production), especially Don't Want You, a pissed-off, high-speed rip at people offering unbidden opinions, and the low-key Outta Me, a brilliant break-up song.

Simply put this is an astonishing piece of preserved archaeology, the Maeshowe neolithic burial chamber is also home to early simple designs of wall carvings, was this the island's first art-gallery?. A thousand years ago the Vikings got here before the archaeologists and left behind extensive runes carved on the walls - the largest single collection in Europe outside Iceland. Maeshowe is in the care of Historic Scotland, meaning you have to pay for entrance but when you get inside you certainly get your money's worth, the guide proves a mine (or should that be a barrow) of information. A visit is well worth the ticket price of £4.50 and if like me you are a member of English Heritage (or Historic Scotland, of course), then flashing your card gets you in for free! Built within sight-of and 300 years after the construction of the Standing Stones of Stenness, Maeshowe was obviously a very important burial place, but sadly the chamber has been opened several times over the passing...

February 08, 2011 President Stealth Strikes Again By Ed Lasky How Obama and his merry band are trying to evade the will of the people WHILE THE UNITED STATED DEBT CLOCK KEEPS RUNNING The people spoke in November when they delivered a shellacking to Democrats and Barack Obama. They had grabbed too much power in ways that ran afoul of tradition, the law, and the will of the people. In electing so many Republicans to office, Americans wanted a course change from the radicalism of the past two years: the regulatory avalanche, the policy missteps, the ObamaCare overreach. Have President Obama and his merry band of followers read the memo yet? The people have had it with the tricks and sly maneuvers used by Democrats to push their agenda on America. Apparently they have not yet heard our voices or care to listen to us -- they still have some tricks up their sleeves. They know the game book of the Republicans -- what their plans are to circumscribe Obama's...

Photographs in this collection have been produced by Kathleen Markham, Daniela Alaniz-Roux, Allison Barden, and Connor Rowe at request of UC Berkeley Anthropology 136k class, for the purposes of digitally documenting the cultural heritage of Alcatraz Island with intent to gain greater insight into the island’s cultural history through the use of photographic technology.
